Working with transgender, nonbinary, and queer clients has always required attention to the sociopolitical conditions in which people build identities, relationships, and lives. In the current political climate, however, clinicians are increasingly encountering transgender clients who are making decisions about healthcare, relationships, disclosure, gender transition, and even where to live in response to rapidly changing conditions.
Drawing on clinical experience and research with transgender individuals, their families, and therapists, this presentation will explore what affirming clinical practice looks like in this context. Designed for clinicians with varying levels of experience working with transgender and nonbinary communities, the presentation will provide a foundation for understanding gender transition while moving beyond a traditional “Trans 101” approach.
Particular attention will be given to supporting client agency without reinforcing fear; navigating uncertainty when clinicians cannot promise safety or predict what comes next; understanding transition as both individual and relational; and recognizing resilience, connection, pleasure, and joy alongside distress. The presentation will offer practical strategies for creating therapeutic relationships in which transgender, nonbinary, and queer clients can explore not only how to survive changing conditions, but how they want to live within them.
