Course Description

One in four girls and one in six boys will experience sexual violence by the time they are 18 years old; understanding and addressing sexual violence is critical for clinicians.

This presentation explores the impact of sexual violence and assault on mental health, equipping clinicians with the tools needed to provide compassionate, effective care. Participants will gain insight into the unique dynamics of healing from sexual violence, learn trauma-informed approaches to screening and intake, and understand best practices for responding to disclosures of sexual abuse.

Learning Objectives

  • Define sexual violence and describe its impact on survivors.
  • Develop competence in assessing for and discussing experiences of sexual violence with clients, including how to respond effectively to disclosures.
  • Name strategies for managing countertransference and maintaining ethical and compassionate care when working with survivors of sexual violence.

Presenter Bio

Jennie Hardman, MSW, LICSW is a psychotherapist with a private practice in St. Paul. She specializes in working with adults who have experienced trauma and works specifically with sexual assault survivors. She is certified in EMDR therapy, Anchored Relational Therapy (formerly AIR Network), and is an EMDR consultant in training. She has taught a Psychopathology and Trauma course for the BSW program at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, is a board-approved supervisor, and leads the business practices in private practice group through the MN Society for Clinical Social Workers. She has attended and facilitated several 40-hour sexual assault advocacy trainings for volunteers and staff providing crisis advocacy services to survivors of sexual violence. Before going to graduate school, Jennie worked for years at different rape crisis centers in MN, gaining critical experience providing advocacy services to survivors of sexual violence. Jennie has sat with survivors in hospital rooms during the sexual assault forensic exams, in courtrooms giving testimony at criminal cases, on crisis lines when they couldn’t sleep at night because of another nightmare, and in police stations reporting an assault for the first time. After graduate school, Jennie was the adolescent therapist at PAVSA (program for aid to victims of sexual assault) in Duluth, MN, and would provide therapy to adolescent survivors of sexual violence and trafficking in her therapy office as well as at the juvenile detention center, the local high school, the homeless youth center, and the adolescent treatment centers.
