Presenter Bio

Dr. Abyan Bashir completed her doctoral studies in psychology, specializing in the neurology trauma, complex trauma, and development, in November 2022. Dr. Bashir also holds an MSW from The University of Chicago Jane Addams College of Social Work, which she completed with a concentration in mental health in 2013. Dr. Bashir has worked with clinics, governmental agencies, and advocacy organizations serving the BIPOC and immigrant communities in Minnesota. She began her community work by creating Let’s Talk Therapy, a Snapchat channel offering information and resources to community members to counteract mental health stigma. She is an avid advocate for culturally sensitive mental health care, as research has indicated that mental health has cultural presentations and appraisals. In hopes of contributing to research that informs work with children of immigrants, Dr. Bashir focused her dissertation research on understanding the barriers to care for 1.5 generation Somali-Americans. Her dissertation research topic is: Mental Health Service Utilization of 1.5 Generation Somali-Americans in Minnesota. Given her clinical experience over a ten-year career, Dr. Bashir has recognized gaps in care as it relates to providing culturally sensitive mental health care to diverse populations. As a result, Dr. Bashir founded Let’s Talk Healing, an agency that provides culturally sensitive mental health and behavioral services. Let’s Talk Healing serves both adults with mental health concerns and children with developmental disabilities.
