Course Description

Dissociative Identity is more prevalent than once believed. DID has been grossly misrepresented in mainstream media as well as online. In this presentation we will learn how DID differs from other dissociative disorders.

Reframing Dissociative Identity from a disorder to an ability created in the brain to protect the individual during times of early neglect and abuse. We will discuss “Parts Work” and how a multimodal approach including talk and art therapy can be applied while working with individuals identified with this ability. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in basic art therapy techniques and view client artwork.

Presenter Bio

Patricia Welch earned a master’s degree in Adlerian Counseling and Psychotherapy with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy and Art Therapy at the Adler Graduate School in Minnesota in 2018. Patricia studied Fine Arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design graduating 2014. Patricia has worked with urban American Indian adolescents for the last 25 years. Her work included utilizing theater as a gang intervention, creating a Native American Doula program for adolescents and adults, facilitating culturally focused parenting and adolescent groups, and therapeutic arts with individuals and groups. Pat has presented at numerous workshops and conferences locally and nationally, focusing on the wholistic approach to healing through creative art therapy related to historical, and intergeneration trauma. Patricia utilizes expressive art therapies and talk therapy within an integrated approach including AIR network to address issues such as trauma, depression, anxiety, and Dissociative Identity Disorder. She believes that Art therapy is a tool to make the invisible, visible.
