Course Description

Practitioners need principles of ethical decision-making as tools in seeking answers. This clinical conversation will help us to both identify and to use sound principles of ethical decision-making in clinical practice.

Two social work ethics CEUs are available upon completion.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the meaning of the legal concept “standard of care”.
  • Identify common ethical dilemmas in clinical practice and be aware of codes of ethical standards relevant to these dilemmas.
  • Recognize 4 principles of ethical decision-making and be able to use them as tools when seeking answers to ethical dilemmas.

Presenter Bio

Ellen is a U of MN Adjunct Psychiatry Instructor practicing psychotherapy, clinical consultation and supervision part time in the independent practitioner offices of Meta Associates in St Paul. She is an MSCSW Past President and Fellow. As Co-Chair of the MSCSW Committee on Law, she provides ethics consultations to members. To achieve social work licensure in Minnesota, she co-founded the Minnesota Coalition of Licensed Social Workers. She has provided training on ethical issues to mental health professionals locally, nationally, and abroad; consultation to regulatory boards, and to attorneys. She has authored articles and chapters on ethical issues. Her book, Record Keeping in Psychotherapy and Counseling: Protecting Confidentiality and the Professional Relationship (2nd edition) is used in social work education and by practitioners in clinical practice. She has been honored for her distinguished contributions to the social work profession by NASW-MN’s Lifetime Achievement Award; NASW’s Social Work Pioneer Award; National Academy of Practice’s Distinguished Practitioner Award; and Smith College School for Social Work’s Day-Garret Award.
