This is a live webinar which will take place on July 13, 2026 from 6-8 PM Central Time on Zoom. You can purchase access to attend live or pre-register to view the recording on/after July 13. All registrations include 12 months of access and two CEUs.

This session explores the legal, ethical, and practical foundations of clinical documentation. Participants will examine the laws, regulations, policies, and professional standards that govern therapeutic records, learn best practices for creating accurate and defensible documentation, and identify common pitfalls that can increase professional liability. The presentation will also address how records are used in licensing investigations, litigation, subpoenas, and audits, as well as the important relationship between HIPAA and the Minnesota Health Records Act and its impact on record keeping and disclosure obligations.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain understanding of key laws governing documentation of therapeutic services and how laws, rules, regulations, and policy intersect; Learn what records should and should not contain and develop practical habits.
  • Identify common documentation mistakes that can increase risk for liability; Understand how records are used in lawsuits, licensing complaints, subpoenas and audits.
  • Discuss the intersect between HIPAA and Minnesota Health Records Act and why it matters.

Presenter Bio

Lizzi Kampf is a licensed attorney and clinical social worker who has worked as a clinician in various Twin Cities healthcare organizations prior to going into the legal field. She regularly advises clients on matters related to the provision of healthcare and trains clinical staff.

    To earn 2 CE credits (recorded, non-interactive), you must watch the entire video. You will not be able to fast-forward or rewind.
  • During the video will be 3 slides with a keyword. The keyword will be on the screen for 20 seconds. Write the keywords down as you will be asked what the keywords are in the survey
  • Certificates of completion will be provided once the video reaches 100% watched, after you mark each lesson "complete" and after submitting the survey. This webinar is setup as a digital course and the course needs to be "100% complete" in order for the completion certificate to unlock. Once the PDF is available, please save it to your computer.
