Course Description

Learning Objectives

  • Learn that the historical roots of applied improvisation today are the uses of games and dramatic arts at Chicago’s Hull House, founded by Jane Addams, to address social ills in the late 19th Century.
  • Be able to describe two improvisation exercises that can be used in a therapeutic or educational training setting to create a supportive environment and invite connection, creativity, and playfulness.
  • Name two or more goals that improvisers and psychotherapists share.

Presenter Bio

Lisa Bany has been on the faculty of The Second City in Chicago for more than twenty-five years. In addition to teaching & directing all levels of improv, she teaches Improv for Anxiety and Improv to Parkinson’s Patients as part of the Second City Wellness Program. Lisa spends every Monday morning leading an improv group at Above & Beyond, a recovery center for homeless addicts in Chicago. She has taught Improv for Therapists, Improv to Chicago Police officers as part of their crisis intervention training, Improv for Autism Spectrum, and many other applied improv programs. She has written four books including the award-winning On Stage: Theater Games and Activities for Kids, which has been translated into Korean and German, and sold all over the world. Lisa’s teaching style is playful, positive, creative, and encouraging. Let’s play! Susan Schultz has been in the Mental Health field in the Twin Cities for over thirty-five years. She started her clinical career as a psychotherapist at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital working in outpatient and inpatient settings as well as providing mental health consultation to medical and surgical units. When she entered the private practice world her focus was providing child, adolescent, and parent mental health services and consultation. In a three-year Infant Mental Health course of study, she trained in Infant Observation (Tavistock Model) and infant-parent psychotherapy. Susan is endorsed as a Clinical Mentor by the Minnesota Association of Children’s Mental Health-Early Childhood Division and rostered as a Child-Parent Psychotherapist. She developed curricula and was on the first instructional team for the University of Minnesota Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate Program. During the pandemic, Susan signed up for an online series of “Improv for Therapists” courses (with Lisa Bany) and since then has been experiencing the synergy of psychotherapy and Improv skills.
