This 2-hour training provides social workers/clinicians with strategies and tools to support clients through their experiences of intimate partner abuse, whether they are going through the leaving process or have already separated from the abusive partner. Gillis’s training combines content from currently available literature, as well as her professional experience helping victims of all genders and sexualities during all stages of the leaving and recovery process.
Stereotypes and misconceptions about IPV will be discussed, as well as some of the major barriers that keep victims from leaving successfully and the many feelings that victims may experience when they leave. Emphasis is placed on how to create an individualized safety plan, particularly with a focus on protecting oneself from non-physical elements of post-separation abuse, including stalking and harassment, which often follow a victim leaving.
