Course Description

Perinatal and postpartum mental health affects 1 in 7 perinatal and postpartum parents each year. To better comprehend the complexities of differentiating, and treating challenges that arise during pregnancy and the postpartum period, this session will provide understanding in recognizing the distinct mental health diagnoses and obstacles encountered by individuals and families.

Emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between transient mood changes and clinically significant disorders such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, OCD, and PTSD. Therapeutic modalities utilized in addressing these conditions will be taught, identifying support and best-practice interventions for those navigating perinatal and postpartum mental health challenges.

Learning Objectives

  • Comprehend the distinct mental health diagnoses and obstacles encountered during the perinatal and postpartum periods.
  • Differentiate between transient mood changes, commonly known as “baby blues,” and clinically significant perinatal and postpartum mental health disorders.
  • Recognize and evaluate best-practice therapeutic modalities utilized in addressing perinatal and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Presenter Bio

Lindsey M. Henke is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist specializing in the grief that accompanies life transitions, specifically during motherhood. She founded Pregnancy After Loss Support (PALS), a nonprofit for parents pregnant after a previous perinatal loss or infant death. Her writing has been featured on TODAY.com and in Pregnancy and Newborn magazine, Huffington Post, and the New York Times and her debut memoir, When Skies Are Gray: A Grieving Mother’s Lullaby, is available where all good books are sold. Lindsey lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where during winter she can be found with her nose in a book. The rest of the year she enjoys hiking with her two living children and husband.
