Course Description

This will be a live webinar on Zoom on November 10 from 6-8 PM Central Time. If you cannot attend live, pre-register to view the recording once it becomes available on November 11.

This seminar will present parenting dynamics that have the potential to complicate and compromise family functioning.  Attendees will explore the power of implicit beliefs and systems dynamics such as power and homeostasis.  Object relations theory will provide new ways of understanding how a parent’s past family experiences can influence the relationship they have with their own child.  The seminar will also focus on the relationship between partners and the importance of a parenting team.

Dynamics that can strengthen families such as attachment, attunement and emotional regulation will be discussed. Consideration will be given to situations that require additional strategies such as high conflict/divorcing couples and families with special needs children.  Case examples will be used throughout to illustrate concepts and interventions.

Learning Objectives

  • Be able to discuss parenting dynamics from a systems perspective.
  • Be able to describe the influence of the parent’s past in the way they respond to their own children.
  • Recognize the ways that parental conflict can harm children.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Siegel is a retired professor from the New York University School of Social Work and a clinician who has worked with families for over fifty years. She is the author of “Repairing Intimacy” (Jason Aronson), Countertransference in Couples Therapy (Norton), What Children Learn From Their Parents Marriage (Harper Collins), Stop Overreacting (New Harbinger), and over 40 academic journal papers and book chapters. She has presented throughout the United States, South Africa, England, China and Israel.
